Important information about student housing for next year (2017-18)

Published October 5, 2016 By Karla Rusch

Believe it or not, it’s already time to start thinking about where you will live next year (academic year 2017-18).  Below is some information to help you get started:

On-campus or off-campus?

Students currently living on campus will receive information from University Housing in December about re-applying to live in the residence halls next year.  Students who plan to move off-campus, or are not sure about their housing plans for next year, should start to research and discuss their options this fall, so that they will be informed and prepared to make a decision about their future living situation after winter break.

It’s never too early to start researching housing options.  However, we do not generally recommend entering a lease for the next academic year prior to winter break.  Off-campus leases are typically for 12 months and run from August through July.  Many students sign leases for the coming school year during January, February, and March.  Even after March, there is still rental housing available in the community – but some housing options may fill up sooner than others and may no longer be available after the early part of the year.  It’s important for your student to carefully investigate any potential rental housing before signing a lease!

  • Websites: The University provides two websites with resources for finding off-campus housing: and
  • Programming:  The Student Legal Clinic and Off-Campus Student Services partner with University Housing to provide “Housing Options”, a one hour presentation about both on-campus and off-campus housing.  This presentation is designed primarily for students currently living in the residence halls who are moving off-campus or are uncertain about where to live next year.  The focus of the program is on helping students to be informed consumers when entering the rental market.

Housing Options will be held on the following dates:

Monday, November 14, 2016 at 12:00 noon

Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 12:00 noon

Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 12:00 noon

Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 12:00 noon

All programs will be held in the New River Room on the 1st floor of the Plemmons Student Union. Please encourage your student to attend!

  • AppState Housing Fair – Wednesday, February 8, 2017, 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. International Hall, Plemmons Student Union:  Sponsored by Student Government Association (SGA) and Off-Campus Student Services, this is an opportunity for students to learn more about an array of off-campus housing options offered by 20+ local rental companies.
  • Individual Consultation:  A licensed attorney is available to review leases and answer student’s questions through the Student Legal Clinic located in the Dean of Students Suite on the 3rd floor of the Student Union.  Appointments can be scheduled by calling (828) 262-8284.
